BUKIT MERTAJAM: It was worth the journey for two families from Selangor and Negri Sembilan who emerged champion and runner-up in the New Straits Times Sudoku Tournament 2008 here on Sunday.

Abdul Khalid Daud, 64, and his daughter Siti Hajariah, 12, from Bandar Baru Sungai Buloh, took the top prize in the parent and child category, defeating engineer S. Kandiah, 43, and son Keeshendra, 12, from Seremban.

Abdul Khalid and Siti Hajariah pocketed RM5,000 while the runners- up received RM3,000.

"We are happy to have emerged winners," said Abdul Khalid, a former Pos Malaysia employee who was the winner of last year's 50 and above category.

Siti Hajariah will use the money for her education.

The NST Sudoku tournament is divided into four categories: 17 and below, 19 to 49 years, 50 and above and parent and child category.

The winners in the other categories were Cheah Tzer Chuan (17 years and below), Hidayah Mat Isa (18 to 49 years) and Hor Yoong Phang (50 years and above).

NST brand manager Leslie Jebaratnam presented the prizes.
